[May 2022 east central Wisconsin] You could hold this "adorbs" Red Fox pup (kit?) in the palm of your hand. That's how small she was. Thanks to the wild-land firefighter who flagged me down and pointed out the den that I had just driven past. I appreciate it! Embarrassed that I missed them. Two pups but a couple days later @ryan.marshik saw four pups at the den site. [May 15, 2022 in North Dakota] backlit Ruddy Duck on a windy day. [Canon EOS R5 with Canon RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1L IS USM lens at 500mm; 1/800 second at f/14; ISO 100; tripod head in floating blind]
[May 16, 2022 in central North Dakota] Maybe what I love most about floating blind photography is that you can peek into the every day world of birds. You are an invisible observer in the marsh. This is the ritualized courtship of the Forster‘s Tern. I focused on the female (right) as she was begging loudly for the male to come in and deliver the ceremonial fish.
Sparky inside his “Cloak of Invisibility.” It is absolutely amazing that a little camo netting and a floating blind will allow you to get up close and personal with all kinds of aquatic birds and mammals. They simply do not recognize this blob as anything human, And therefore go about their daily lives including court ship right in front of you. [May 16, 2022 prairie potholes of North Dakota with ryan.marshik]
[May 16, 2022] Grebes are really charismatic characters. And we enjoyed FOUR species in central North Dakota last week (Eared, Western, Red-necked and Pied-billed….Missed Horned and Clark’s). Ryan and I both did a lot of shooting into the sun for a backlit effect. I got plenty of frontlet year degree photos last year so this was time to try something new. Do you think I should take out that reed that’s in front of the bird?
This is what we came for! The “Rush dance“ of the Western Grebe. They were in full display at this big colony in the prairie pothole region of North Dakota. [May 16, 2022.] I cropped it much wider than this but this is all Instagram will allow.
