April 4-5. 2025

In part 2 of my “Grouse to Goose” birding and bird photography trip in western Minnesota, I head south to the west central part of the state to find at least ONE Greater White-fronted Goose. But along the way, and despite the spring snow, I encounter multiple cool birds—Lapland Longspurs in near breeding plumage, dancing Sandhill Cranes, a “Gray Ghost,” and the World’s Largest Greater Prairie-Chicken!

Excited to finally get to one of Minnesota’s best birding sites, North Ottawa Impoundment in Grant County, my day is nearly ruined as I get mired in mud while pursuing a daytime-hunting Short-eared Owl.

But then a massive flock of Greater White-fronted Geese arises in the distance…3,000?, 5,000? Quite a sight, and success in my search!

Sparky heads to northwest Minnesota after an early April snowstorm. He has reserved a Sharp-tailed Grouse blind and is excited to photograph them dancing on top of the snow. But, alas, disappointment. The sounds of the courtship displays are amazing as usual, but he can’t really see them dance!

Sandhill Cranes and a bobbin of Robins in a ghost town save the day.

Daunted (is that a word?), Sparky sets a goal for the rest of the trip. See if he achieves it in Part 2.

Mammals take the spotlight in this early spring episode from Minnesota’s Sax-Zim Bog. Sparky encounters two charismatic weasel species in the Bog’s first unfrozen water of the year. 

The snow is mostly gone, but ice clings to area lakes and rivers, but Sparky finds some open water to check.

First he spots something on the ice at Sax WMA, which turns out to be a River Otter, but there is something wrong with this “mega water weasel.”

Later, while looking for early returning waterfowl at Stone Lake (Wood Duck, Canada Geese) he finds, and travels with, a fast-swimming Mink.

The day ends with a brief sunset encounter with a hunting Great Gray Owl.

Virtually Live 52 S5E7

Sparky makes a March 8 excursion into the boreal forest of Minnesota’s Superior National Forest. He finds a gorgeous male Spruce Grouse in a beautiful snowfall. Boreal Chickadees and a flock of Redpolls enliven the mostly quiet woods. 

Snowshoeing down a remote creek, Sparky breaks through the ice…Fortunately it’s only a couple feet deep! Will he survive?! Oh wait, I’m the one writing this, so I guess I did get out of that icy situation.

Animal tracking was awesome with the 2 inches of new snow—Moose, Lynx, Snowhoe Hare, Pine Marten, River Otter all left signs of their recent passing.

Sparky also stops for a cross-country ski a loop at the Flathorn-Gogek trails.

Our final stop is at Rich Hoeg’s feeders near Greenwood Creek where we find a pair of Red-breasted Nuthatches investigating a possible nest cavity.

A surprise Boreal Owl is the Superstar Bird of the Day!

January 3-6, 2025: Sparky finds and photographs FOUR species of northern owls during Friends of Sax-Zim Bog’s 2025 BRRRRdathon-World’s Coldest Birdathon. TWO Boreal Owls, TWO Great Gray Owls, Snowy Owl and Northern Hawk Owl! What a great event, and photos of the other teams are shared.

Bitter cold makes birding difficult as he tries to fat bike and bird on a remote forest road (unsuccessfully). But Sparky has more success along Lake Superior with a very late lingering Bufflehead. White-winged Crossbills appear along Gray Jay Way in Sax-Zim Bog. Other highlights include two “rough” birds…Rough-legged Hawk and Ruffed Grouse. Sparky also explores a bit of the 1010 acres Friends of Sax-Zim Bog recently purchased along Owl Avenue.

Sparky went down to the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival to represent Friends of Sax-Zim Bog…but of course he couldn’t go to one of the best birding spots in the country and just sit behind a table! 

He had to get out birding and photographing some of the “Valley specialists” such as the parrots and parakeets.

He went on the Festival’s “Parrot Palooza” and connected with Green Parakeet (photo lifer), Red-crowned Amazon (Parrot), Yellow-headed Amazon, and Red-lored Amazon.

A few days later he discovered that Old Hidalgo, TX has a breeding population of Monk Parakeet. Sparky survived a Chihuahua-pack attack, and soon after discovered a flock of 43 “Monks.”

Teddy Roosevelt National Park, North Dakota

In Part Two of Sparky and Ryan’s wildlife photography trip to North Dakota’s Theodore Roosevelt National Park, they use the “ol’ bandana trick” to bring a herd of Pronghorn closer and closer. Also, two more evenings in “Badgote Valley” produce encounters with multiple Coyotes, a couple buck Mule Deer and Pronghorns. They spend time with a “late bloomer” herd of Bison who still have a fairly small “red dog” calf, a band of Wild Horses, Prairie Dogs and several Sharp-tailed Grouse.

Sparky also shares his TOP TEN favorite photos from the trip.

October 8, 2024—Sparky takes his camera and $1 Cheerleader megaphone to northern Minnesota’s Superior National Forest to see if he can call in a Moose. But he gets distracted by TWO Spruce Grouse!; a gorgeous female and a stunning male. He finally finds a good looking spot to start calling for Moose. And Sparky’s imitation of a cow Moose must be spot on as a big bull comes in looking for love.

Warbler-Palooza II starts strong with Sparky finding one of the rarest breeding warblers in North America….the Connecticut. But technical difficulties hamper the warbler count. Fortunately he is able to share video of some beautiful warblers including Northern Parula, Golden-winged Warblers. And there are many other highlights to be seen in northern Minnesota’s Sax-Zim Bog in summer…Great Gray Owl, Sedge Wrens, LeConte’s Sparrow, Snowshoe Hares and much more. Sparky also shows us highlights from May’s Warbler Wednesdays and the bi-annual “garbage clean-up best find contest.” Oh yeah, it’s also time for Tiny Bird Art!

Sparky finally makes it to Coastal California to do some more birding and bird photography—Point Reyes, Bodega Head, Elk Head Trail at Trinidad Beach. Lifer Elephant Seal appears at Drake’s Beach! Inland bird highlights include Chestnut-backed Chickadees, singing Wilson’s Warblers, fruit-eating Band-tailed Pigeon, curious California Thrasher pair, and a surprisingly loud Yellow-breasted Chat.

On the way to the Coast Sparky detours to enjoy the MASSIVE California Redwoods along the Avenue of the Giants and Founders Grove in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. He even drives THROUGH the Chandelier Tree!

Along the Coast, the best sightings were a couple pairs of enigmatic Black Oystercatchers, Western Gull with four fuzzy chicks, Heerman’s Gulls, Pelagic Cormorants, thousands of nesting Common Murres and watching the fascinating courtship and mating rituals of the Brandt’s Cormorant.
