Sucky to Super! Prairie to Bog Birding/Bird Photography Trip

Mid-Trip Pivot to BIRDING Minnesota’s Big Bog Wildlife PHOTOGRAPHY

February 7-8

The prairies of northwest Minnesota’s Glacial Ridge National Wildlife Refuge is a vast prairie restoration project…and in midwinter it can be a bit bleak.

Sparky encounters a few cool species including Sharp-tailed Grouse and Northern Shrike but decides to do a MID-TRIP pivot and go to Big Bog Boardwalk even farther north. The mile-long boardwalk in Big Bog State Recreation Area is the longest of its kind.

Sparky has to snowshoe to get there but finds MANY White-winged Crossbills feasting on Black Spruce cones, a Canada Jay gathering nesting material and he plays hide-and-seek with a Snowshoe Hare.

But the fun doesn’t stop there as he finds a couple “Hoary” Redpolls and a very focused Pine Marten allows Sparky to join in in his hunt!

Then as a BONUS, Sparky stumbles upon a Great Gray Owl hunting in interesting backlight.

Side trips include birding a GHOST TOWN, finding a historic French Canadian settlement and cemetery, and “relaxing” in Key West.

“Back-Pocket OWL” & ANI Surprise! Rio Grande Valley Birding Butterflying TX Part 3

In this Part 3 of Rio Grande Valley Texas birding, Sparky visits San Benito Wetlands, National Butterfly Center, Frontera Audubon, and Hugh Ramsey Park. He tries to fit this all in while still manning his Friends of Sax-Zim Bog table for the Rio Grande Valley Festival in Harlingen.

An unexpected McCall’s Eastern Screech-Owl is a “back-pocket” bird….One that is now only a subspecies but may be a full species (and a Lifer) someday. Other highlights include Clay-colored Thrush, bathing(?) Scissor-tailed Flycatchers, Anhinga in slow motion, Vermilion Flycatcher, Gray Hawk, Olive Sparrow, Green Jays, Plain Chachalacas and Altamira Oriole.

A surprising trio of Groove-billed Anis makes Sparky happy since he hasn’t seen this species in decades!

The butterflying was fantastic too, as Sparky gets many Lifers including Blomfild’s Beauty, Gray Cracker, Soldier and Florida White, but also enjoys stellar view of stunners like Red-bordered Pixie and more Mexican Bluewings than ever before.

Boreal Bonanza! OWL Irruption Minnesota & World’s Coldest Birdathon Sax-Zim BRRRRdathon Virtually Live 50 S5E5 Jan

January 3-6, 2025: Sparky finds and photographs FOUR species of northern owls during Friends of Sax-Zim Bog’s 2025 BRRRRdathon-World’s Coldest Birdathon. TWO Boreal Owls, TWO Great Gray Owls, Snowy Owl and Northern Hawk Owl! What a great event, and photos of the other teams are shared.

Bitter cold makes birding difficult as he tries to fat bike and bird on a remote forest road (unsuccessfully). But Sparky has more success along Lake Superior with a very late lingering Bufflehead. White-winged Crossbills appear along Gray Jay Way in Sax-Zim Bog. Other highlights include two “rough” birds…Rough-legged Hawk and Ruffed Grouse. Sparky also explores a bit of the 1010 acres Friends of Sax-Zim Bog recently purchased along Owl Avenue.

FIVE species of Parrots Lower RIO GRANDE VALLEY TX Birding Festival 2024 Bird Photography

Sparky went down to the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival to represent Friends of Sax-Zim Bog…but of course he couldn’t go to one of the best birding spots in the country and just sit behind a table!

He had to get out birding and photographing some of the “Valley specialists” such as the parrots and parakeets.

He went on the Festival’s “Parrot Palooza” and connected with Green Parakeet (photo lifer), Red-crowned Amazon (Parrot), Yellow-headed Amazon, and Red-lored Amazon.

A few days later he discovered that Old Hidalgo, TX has a breeding population of Monk Parakeet. Sparky survived a Chihuahua-pack attack, and soon after discovered a flock of 43 “Monks.”

Sparky shares some photography tips for shooting busy birds in low-light conditions.

I witness a rarely seen behavior—Necedah NWR WI – Karner Blue butterfly! Whooping Cranes – June 2024

After dropping my youngest son off at his aunt & uncles in Madison, WI in early June, I spend two partial days at Necedah NWR,  one of my favorite National Wildlife Refuges. And it does not disappoint!

I capture the mechanism for Common Nighthawk booming in slow motion video. Crazy stuff!

A pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers entertain me with their bold antics. I share my early memories of this species at my grandparents farm in South Dakota (including the world’s best photo of this species that I took at age 14:)

I stumble across a couple species that I never see in the North Woods including a Willow Flycatcher (“FITZ-bew”) and a cooperative and beautiful Blue-winged Warbler.

And I can’t forget the rare butterfly that makes Necedah its home….the “Karner” Melissa Blue butterfly. I spend some quality time with this beauty amongst the native Wild Lupine (Lupinus perennis).

An evening atop the Observation Tower is always peaceful, and this time I spot a pair of Whooping Cranes feeding on the far side.

Finally, I stop in to the very well done Nature Center. A great place in a great refuge!

Look what I SQUEEKED in!…Birding Northern CALIFORNIA Part 4

Birding Northern California Part 4—Pine Flat Road, Titlow Mountain Road, Golden Gate Park. Bird Highlights include booming Sooty Grouse, Red-breasted Sapsucker nest, Mountain Quail covey, California Thrasher, Cassin’s Vireo, Bell’s Sparrow. And Sparky squeeks in a Bobcat to within 20 feet!

Birding CALIFORNIA Coast –Bodega Head Point Reyes Part 3

Sparky finally makes it to Coastal California to do some more birding and bird photography—Point Reyes, Bodega Head, Elk Head Trail at Trinidad Beach. Lifer Elephant Seal appears at Drake’s Beach! Inland bird highlights include Chestnut-backed Chickadees, singing Wilson’s Warblers, fruit-eating Band-tailed Pigeon, curious California Thrasher pair, and a surprisingly loud Yellow-breasted Chat.

On the way to the Coast Sparky detours to enjoy the MASSIVE California Redwoods along the Avenue of the Giants and Founders Grove in Humboldt Redwoods State Park. He even drives THROUGH the Chandelier Tree!

Along the Coast, the best sightings were a couple pairs of enigmatic Black Oystercatchers, Western Gull with four fuzzy chicks, Heerman’s Gulls, Pelagic Cormorants, thousands of nesting Common Murres and watching the fascinating courtship and mating rituals of the Brandt’s Cormorant.

Birding High Sierras FAWN RESCUE Lassen Volcanic National Park CALIFORNIA

Sparky birds northern California’s Lassen Volcanic National Park in this episode. Unfortunately the late spring has the road through the park still blocked by snow. But he is able to see a bunch of cool mountain birds including Hermit Warbler, Mountain Chickadee, “Thick-billed” Fox Sparrow, “Audubon’s” Warbler, Western Tanager, Clark’s Nutcracker, Olive-sided Flycatcher, and he finds the nests of Steller’s Jay and Dark-eyed Junco.

But something is calling incessantly from a steep bank. Sparky investigates and finds a day-old Mule Deer fawn wedged in a rock crevice.  See what happens next!

CREATURE OF THE MORNING MARSH

Floating Blind Photography UNEXPECTED FINDS! Earth Day Floating Hide

Sparky and Ryan take their floating blinds out for some morning bird photography at Tobin-Kimmes Wetlands in Wisconsin. Curious Trumpeter Swans come very close and check out Sparky in his portable “muskrat house.” Great encounter with a close Hooded Merganser results in Sparky’s best photos of the female of this species ever! And finally, Sparky spends about 45 minutes with an unexpected guest as a Belted Kingfisher drops in on the marsh.
