[Jan 17, 2021] One of TWELVE Spruce Grouse in one covey. This guy was slowly working his way towards the tip of an eye level Jack Pine branch, plucking needles as he went. Their entire winter diet is the needles of Jack Pine and spruces...Yummy! Superior National Forest, Minnesota. This is actually a single video frame extracted from a video clip. [Canon R5 with Canon 100-500mm lens at 428mm; f6.3] #sprucegrouse #superiornationalforest #borealbirds #minnesotawildlife #sparkystensaas #thephotonaturalist #canonr5wildlife #birdsofinstagram #borealbeauty
[Feb 13, 2021] It appears this immature Bald Eagle is about to have a Goldeneye lunch, but the eagles hunting this open patch of the Mississippi River during the Polar Vortex were actually plucking fish after fish from the water. Minus 25 F windchill. Frozen toes, frozen fingers. Southwest Wisconsin. Converted to black and white. Vole-hunting Northern Hawk Owl in Minnesota’s Sax-Zim Bog. Only one around this winter but I couldn’t find it yesterday. This beauty from 2011 [January 4, 2011; Nikon D300 with 70-200mm f4 lens at 140mm; 1/2500 second at f4; ISO 400; McDavitt Road, Sax-Zim Bog, St. Louis County, Minnesota] #northernhawkowl #hawkowl #huntofthehawkowl #saxzim #saxzimbog #bogdiversity #borealbirds #owlaboutminnesota #invasionofthevolesnatchers #thephotonaturalist #sparkystensaas #minnesotawildlife #birdsofminnesota

Boreal Chickadees are much more handsome in real life than depicted in bird books. Here you can compare the more common Black-capped in the foreground with its rarely seen brown-capped cousin, the Boreal Chickadee.
