About the Illustrator: Judy Gibbs has spent her adult career working with folks to better understand and care for the natural world. Whether through her illustrations  or serving on various boards, she has striven to protect her beloved Duluth’s green spaces. Judy was Program Director at Hartley Nature Center until 2003. She then built, with 750 volunteers, the Superior Hiking Trail through Duluth, and has co-authored two books about it and is working on a third. She became the Trails Coordi-nator for the City of Duluth and worked with passionate folks to create trail systems that Outside Magazine titled Duluth as best Outdoor City in 2014. She observes the progression of seasons on daily walks and runs.

About the Photographer & Caption Writer: Sparky Stensaas is a naturalist, publisher, writer who has authored six books on the natural history of the North Woods. He is a photographer with a passion for all things wild, including birds (duh!), spiders, (wow!), butterflies (ooh!), fungi (really?), mammals, moths and miscellaneous Minnesota stuff. Sparky’s latest venture is Friends of Sax-Zim Bog (www.SaxZim.org) a non-profit aimed at educating the public about the natural history of bogs and purchasing and preserving land in one of North America’s premiere birding locations. He lives with his wife, Bridget and sons, Birk and Bjorn, under the big pines in the Nemadji Valley of northern Minnesota.

About the Author: Larry Weber’s own “backyard” is his old farm in Carlton County, Minnesota where he lives with his wife and son. He was a science teacher for more than 40 years, and received the Minnesota Secondary Science Teacher of the Year and the National Biology Teacher Association’s Middle School Life Science Teacher of the Year awards. He has weekly radio phenology programs and a phenology column for a local newspaper. He is author of Butterflies of the North Woods, Spiders of the North Woods and Fascinating Fungi of the North Woods (Kollath-Stensaas Publishing), and Web Watching and Awesome Autwin (Stone Ridge Press). Daily walks on his land keep Larry in tune with the phenology of our northern flora and fauna.
