What do you do well before sunrise when there is no light for sharp portraits? Why you slow your shutter speed down to a risky 1/3 second and pan... and take LOTS of photos. This Greater Prairie-Chicken was Photographed from a blind at Tympanachus Wildlife Management Area in far northwestern Minnesota. It’s “chicken season!” ...the time of year when grouse and prairie-chickens perform their courtship dances for lurking ladies. This Greater Prairie-Chicken was Photographed from a blind at Tympanachus Wildlife Management Area in far northwestern Minnesota. [April 26, 2019; Canon 7D with Canon 400mm f5.6 lens; 1/1600 second at f5.6; ISO 500; tripod; Snapseed filter in post] #greaterprairiechicken #tympanachuswma #tympanachus #lekmagic #minnesotawildlife #sparkystensaas #thephotonaturalist #prairie #glacialridgenationalwildliferefuge #glacialridgenwr
Mink in northeastern Minnesota’s Sax-Zim Bog on April 1, 2021...just minutes before finding my second mustelid of the day, a River Otter! But I was actually more excited about this Mink since I did not have any decent photos of the species ...until this day. While it dove underwater to catch small fish and crayfish, I jumped out of my car and got in the brush along the roadside ditch. He paid me very little attention but didn’t give many photo opportunities before swimming off. I was able to get some fun slow motion video of him surfacing from beneath the water. That is the beauty of the Canon R5… It is easy to switch quickly over to video from stills. [April 4, 2022] Still a bit of snow in our ravine but tom Wild Turkeys are in full display. I woke on this morning to the sounds of flapping battling wings multiple toms beating each other with their wings. I also like the backlit aspen catkins that make this bird – in – the – landscape photo work [Canon R5 with Canon 100-500mm lens at 400mm; 1/1000 second at f6; ISO 200; -1.3ev; hand held] #tomturkey #wildturkey #creativewildlife #creativewildlifephotography #skogstjarna #carltoncountymn #sparkystensaas #thephotonaturalist #backlitbirds
I had a “two mustelid day” on April 1st ...and both in a nearly ice-free ditch in the Sax-Zim Bog (The second most of it will be coming in the next Instagram post). This River Otter broke through some skim ice and I fired off a couple shots before he continued energetically searching for crayfish and small fish. [Canon R5 with Canon 100-500mm lens at 363mm; 1/400 second at f7.1; ISO 320] #riverotter #saxzimbog #saxzim #saxzimwild #bogdiversity #sparkystensaas #thephotonaturalist #minnesotawildlife #mustelidmonday #mustelidmania #ottersofinstagram
Taken this morning at my house... and in my pajamas! (April 4, 2022) Two tom Wild Turkeys in full display. Just out of frame are about 20 hens and 3 more toms. Gobbling good morning.
