June 17, 2022; Churchill, Manitoba on Hudson Bay] Sunset comes late in the Far North. This was 9:30 pm and as I sat on the edge of this tundra pond, 3 Pacific Loons courted. (A video of my experiences on the tundra around Churchill will be coming soon to my YouTube channel “Sparky Stensaas“) [Canon R5 with Canon 100-500mm lens; 1/800 second at f7.1; ISO 2500; tripod] #Churchill #churchillmanitoba #tundra #tundrabirds #manitobawildlife #thephotonaturalist #sparkystensaas #canonr5wildlife #birds #birdsofinstagram #birdsofcanada #pacificloon #loons #beautyofbirds #best_birds_of_instagram
[June 18, 2022; Churchill, Manitoba on Hudson Bay] It’s nice being in a place where Killdeer aren’t the most common plover. The Semipalmated Plovers nest in rocky gravely areas around Churchill; especially convenient nesting spots include the edges of dirt roads and gravel parking pads. And the males stick around. This female’s mate did a very convincing broken-wing act to draw me away from the nest. But she sat tight and I was able to crawl quite close to her. With these temperatures in the 40sF you don’t want to flush birds off their nest for very long. I was happy that she stuck tight.(A video of my experiences on the tundra around Churchill will be coming soon to my YouTube channel “Sparky Stensaas“) [Canon R5 with Canon 100-500mm lens; 1/500 second at f7.1; ISO 1250; handheld while lying on the ground] #Churchill #churchillmanitoba #tundra #tundrabirds #manitobawildlife #thephotonaturalist #sparkystensaas #canonr5wildlife #birds #birdsofinstagram #birdsofcanada #semipalmatedplover #nestingshorebirds #beautyofbirds #best_birds_of_instagram
[June 19, 2022; Churchill, Manitoba on Hudson Bay] Lovey dovey pair of Arctic Hare? I’m assuming the hare in the back is a male because every time she went anywhere he followed right behind. (A video of my experiences on the tundra around Churchill will be coming soon to my YouTube channel “Sparky Stensaas“) [Canon R5 with Canon 100-500mm lens; 1/1250 second at f7.1; ISO 8000; handheld] #Churchill #churchillmanitoba #tundra #tundrawildlife #manitobawildlife #thephotonaturalist #sparkystensaas #canonr5wildlife #arctichare #arctichares
[June 17, 2022; Churchill, Manitoba on Hudson Bay] Ice choked Hudson Bay at the mouth of the Churchill River when I first arrived on June 17. The Common Eiders were swimming in small flocks between the ice flows. They are strictly an ocean duck for 11months of the yearbut nest just inland on the tundra. (A video of my experiences on the tundra around Churchill will be coming soon to my YouTube channel “Sparky Stensaas“) [Canon R5 with Canon 100-500mm lens; 1/800 second at f7.1; ISO 100; handheld; processed in Snapseed] #Churchill #churchillmanitoba #manitobawildlife #thephotonaturalist #sparkystensaas #canonr5wildlife #birds #birdsofinstagram #birdsofcanada #commoneider #hudsonbay #iceducks #beautyofbirds #best_birds_of_instagram
[June 18, 2022; Churchill, Manitoba on Hudson Bay] I didn’t take many creative photos on this trip, but this scene caught my eye; a Semipalmated Plover against spruces and sunrise sun blobs. (A video of my experiences on the tundra around Churchill will be coming soon to my YouTube channel “Sparky Stensaas“) [Canon R5 with Canon 100-500mm lens; 1/500 second at f8; ISO 1600; handheld] #Churchill #churchillmanitoba #tundra #tundrabirds #manitobawildlife #thephotonaturalist #sparkystensaas #canonr5wildlife #birds #birdsofinstagram #birdsofcanada #semipalmatedplover #beautyofbirds #best_birds_of_instagram
[June 19, 2022; Churchill, Manitoba on Hudson] Of course I was hoping to have an Arctic Fox experience on the tundra, but the odds were slim; an outbreak of rabies last winter forced government officials to eliminate most Arctic Fox around the town of Churchill. But this beautiful vixen fox made up for it. She Had to half grown pups in a nearby den and so was keeping a close eye on me. I will have a lot more photos of this stunning creature in the next few weeks.
